U.S.T. GETS ACTING V.C
A Professor of Organic Chemistry and former deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, Professor Victor Omuaru, has been appointed acting Vice Chancellor of the institution in succession to Professor Simeon Achinewhu who had held the position since September, 2000.

Professor Omuaru's appointment was confirmed by the out-gone governor of the state and visitor to the institution, Dr. Peter Odili after he (Omuaru) had beaten three other contenders in the race for the exalted office.

A product of prestigious institutions at the secondary, University and post-graduate levels, Prof. Omuaru attended the famous Methodist Boys High School, Oron, where he did his Cambridge School Certificate and Higher School Certificate (HSC) courses. He later attended Nigeria's premier university, the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his first degree in chemistry in 1973. He later capped it with a doctorate degree in Organic chemistry from the School of Pharmacy of the prestigious University of London in 1980.

He returned to the country in 1981 and had since been on the staff of the university, where he passed through the ranks of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, a position he occupied for six years before his appointment as acting vice-chancellor.

Professor Omuaru who has published several works in world-rated scientific journals was one-time chairman of Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), UST chapter.

Professor Omuaru was among the first set of graduates to serve under the National Youth Corp Service (NYSC) scheme (1973-74).

The new acting Vice-chancellor who hails from Bakana in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, is married with children.

ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR ALMA MATER - PROF. TASIE
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Prof. Godwin Tasie has charged Alumni Associations, in the nation's tertiary institutions to assist in the development of their Alma Maters.

Professor Tasie made this call when the executive members of the Old Students Associations of the International Secondary School of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Onne Campus paid him a courtesy call. Prof. Tasie argued that it was the responsibility of Alumni Associations to ensure that their Alma Maters were properly taken care of by their proprietors and all the stakeholders in the Education Sector. Prof. Tasie assured the Association that the 9th Governing Council of the University would do all in its power to address their problems by upgrading the Onne Campus of the International Secondary School of the university.

Earlier in his address, the President of the old Students' Association, of International Secondary School Onne Campus of Rivers State University of Science and Technology Mr. Joel Didi said the essence of the visit was to acquaint the Pro-Chancellor with the problems and progress so far made in the school.

Mr. Didi explained that the school for sometime has not received adequate attention from the university authority and called on the governing council to assist with the provision of infrastructural, human and other facilities in the school. Mr. Didi used the opportunity to commend the 9th Governing Council of the university for its developmental strides within the short period of their appointment and pledged the unflinching support of his Association to the Governing Council.

Also speaking a Patron of the Association, Chief K.N. Waite told the Pro-Chancellor that the Onne Community had benefited immensely from the International Secondary School of the university. He however, called the attention of the pro-Chancellor to the unhealthy practice of some unscrupulous individuals who are in the habit of illegally leasing out university land to people.

The highlights of the visit was the presentation of the award of Excellence to Prof. Tasie for his outstanding performance and passion for development by the Association. The Association also donated Books to the university.

In order to appreciate Dr. Peter Odili, the former Governor of Rivers State and Visitor to the university, the Association unfolded their plans to immortalize Odili's name by building a library complex to be named "Sir Peter Odili Library Complex" for International Secondary School Onne Campus. The architectural plan of the said building was subsequently handed over to the Pro-Chancellor for consideration.

The executive members of the Association were received by the Pro-Chancellor and other Principal Officers of the university.

RSUST, UK FIRM SIGN SCIENCE EQUIPMENT SUPPLY PACT
The Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt has signed a contract with a United Kingdom based company, Eagle Scientific and Laboratory Equipment Limited for the supply of Science and Engineering equipment to the university.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 9th Governing Council of the university, Professor Godwin O.M. Tasie stated that the contract is geared towards upgrading of programmes in the institution.

Professor Tasie who noted that out of thirty-three programmes of the university, only six have full accreditation, expressed the Council's resolve to ensure that all programmes in the university are fully accredited.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council stated that forty-five projects have so far been embarked upon by the council while some are on-going, and also announced that First Inland Bank will soon commence the building of a one hundred million naira hostel donated to the university.

Professor Tasie urged the contractor to ensure the delivery of the equipment within the eight weeks stipulated period before the arrival of the National Universities Commission (NUC) team in September this year.

He also lauded the out-gone State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili for the funding and academic freedom granted the university as well as congratulated Sir Celestine Omehia as the new Governor of the State, expressing the hope that he would also assist in the upliftment of the university.

Also speaking, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Victor Omuaru described the signing ceremony as significant to the university and lauded Professor Tasie for his zeal in uplifting the standard of the university.

In his speech, the Managing Director, Eagle Scientific and Laboratory Equipment Limited, Mr. Yousuf M. Jaafar thanked the university for the opportunity given him to supply the equipment, promising to deliver them within the stipulated time.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Victor Omuaru signed the contract on behalf of the university, while Mr. Yousuf M. Jaafar signed on behalf of Eagle Scientific and Laboratory Equipment Limited.

DIAMOND BANK IDENTIFIES WITH RSUST
Diamond Bank Plc, has donated a 32-seater Toyota bus to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.

Presenting the keys and other documents of the bus to Prof. Godwin Tasie, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 9th Governing Council of the institution who stood in for then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon C. Achinewhu, the Group Head, Commercial Banking, South of the Bank Folorunsho Odum, said the gesture was the bank's little way of identifying with the institution.

Responding, Prof. Tasie thanked the Bank for its kind gesture and enjoined it to continue to render positive services to the Nigerian economy. His words: "Government alone cannot provide all we need to ensure an enabling environment for learning. We are overjoyed by this gesture. We thank Diamond bank for also promising to donate a floor of its building here fully equipped with computers to us. We challenge other banks operating in the school to emulate the kind gesture of Diamond Bank and contribute meaningfully towards the development of RSUST".

The Pro-Chancellor also used the medium to thank the Port Harcourt City Local Government Council for renovating the staff school and the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Nyesom Wike, for donating a 21 room ultra-modern hostel facility for post-graduate students of the institution. He also informed the public that a total of 36 projects have so far been executed by the 9th Governing Council with part of the N2bn given to the management by the state governor, Dr. Peter Odili.

Highlight of the presentation was an inspection tour of some of the projects by the management of the University, Diamond Bank officials and journalists.

ANGLICAN BISHOP COMMENDS UST PRO-CHANCELLOR
The Bishop of the newly created Ikwerre Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Rt. Rev. Blessing Chinyere Enyindah, has commended Prof. Godwin Tasie, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 9th Governing Council of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, for his contributions towards the development of the university.

Rev. Enyindah made the commendation when he paid Prof. Tasie a courtesy visit in his lodge in the university. Rev. Enyindah said he was impressed by the level of development so far achieved in the university since the appointment of Prof. Tasie as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution.

Rev. Enyindah also recalled with delight the contributions of Prof. Tasie toward the creation of the Anglican Diocese of Ikwerre and applauded him for his hardwork, integrity and selfless service to the university, the church and humanity.

In his response, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University Prof. Godwin Tasie expressed delight at the visit and used the opportunity to congratulate Bishop Enyindah for his appointment as the pioneer Anglican Bishop of Ikwerre Diocese and charged him to live up to the challenges of the New Anglican Diocese of Ikwerre.

The highlight of the visit was the dedication of the Pro-Chancellor's Lodge on campus to God.

UST GETS A SUBSTANTIVE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN
The Governing Council of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt has approved the appointment of Dr. (Lady) Blessing Ahiauzu as the University Librarian.

In a statement signed by Sir M. Y. Oguru, Registrar of the institution and Secretary to Council Dr. (Lady) Ahiauzu's appointment was approved at its meeting held on 2nd May, 2007. Until her appointment, Dr. (Lady) Ahiauzu was the Acting Librarian of the university. A professional Librarian, she holds a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of Port Harcourt, and A. L. A. from the United Kingdom and M.L.S. from Imo State University. This is in addition to her more than twenty-year cognate experience in Library and Information Science. She has also published several books and articles in both local and international journals of note.
